The U.S. and Italy concluded the 50th iteration of the Joint Military Commission to discuss ongoing military cooperation between the two Allies at the joint U.S.-Italian army post on Caserma Ederle in Vicenza, Italy, Oct. 20, 2023.

This year, more than 50 personnel from the two militaries attended the U.S.-hosted commission.

The event was co-chaired by U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Chris McKinney, U.S. European Command’s deputy director for the Security Cooperation and Partnering Division and Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office, and Italian Brig. Gen. Alessandro Grassano, deputy chief of the III Department of the Defence General Staff, International Relations and Arm Control. It is a bilateral engagement that occurs biannually to preserve mutual commitment, support and trust toward strengthening the military relationship between Italy and the U.S.

Topics of discussion among military leaders, legal professionals, environmental experts and headquarters staff included counter-UAV cooperation, the need for anti-mafia screening coordination, military basing agreements and climate change.

The next meeting is expected to occur in May 2024.
