USEUCOM, Denmark Military Staff Talks Advance Collective Defense

U.S. European Command (USEUCOM) and the Danish Defence Command this week concluded high-level meetings focused on a full spectrum of security cooperation issues, spanning the Arctic region to the Baltics. The bilateral military talks took place in Denmark’s capital city of Copenhagen and its Kastellet, a citadel belonging to the country’s Ministry of Defence and home to several military headquarters.
With some 20 senior military and civilian officials participating, the Danish delegation was led by Royal Danish Air Force Maj. Gen. Anders Rex, Denmark Defence Command’s chief of staff for plans and capabilities. The American delegation was headed by U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Daniel Cheever, North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command’s director of plans, policy and strategy, and U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Edward Vaughan, USEUCOM’s deputy director for security cooperation, policy, partnering and space capabilities.
“Given the security situation on Europe’s eastern flank today, further solidifying bilateral and multi-lateral relationships across the NATO alliance becomes ever more paramount,” Vaughan said. “With global integration at the heart of our security efforts across the globe, engaging in constructive operational and policy discussions that advance our collective defense are absolutely critical to countering current and future adversaries.”
Danish and American subject-matter experts discussed a wide array of defense-related topics, ranging from the current operational environments and planned exercises to strategic initiatives like the State Partnership Program and the Arctic Security Forces Roundtable. Also discussed during the daylong discussions were operations in Greenland, the world’s largest island and one of the three constituent countries that form the Kingdom of Denmark.
“The Kingdom of Denmark and the United States have long been steadfast partners, enjoying a close and enduring relationship with a shared commitment to European security,” Rex said. “Prominent to our strong relationship are the strategic and focused efforts to jointly address the evolving security environment of the Arctic and Baltic regions.”
